چکیده

Energy consumption of network operators can be minimized by the dynamic and smart relocation of networking resources. In this paper, we propose to take advantage of network virtualization to enable a smart energy aware network provisioning. The virtualization of networking resources leads to the problem of mapping virtual demands to physical resources, known as Virtual Network Embedding (VNE). Our proposal modifies and improves exact existing energy aware VNE proposals where the objective is to switch off as many network nodes and interfaces as possible by allocating the virtual demands to a consolidated subset of active physical networking equipment. As exact energy efficient VNE approaches are hard to solve for large network sizes and have an adverse effect in the number of successful embeddings, an heuristic approach to reconfigure the allocation of already embedded virtual networks, minimizing the energy consumption, is also proposed. 2013 Elsevier B.V. Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization: bridging the world of virtual networks

Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are two emerging and complementary concepts that can be considered as key players in the virtual networks world. In particular, SDN allows managing different network services through abstraction of higher-level functionality, while NFV leverages the use of virtualization technologies to virtualize specific network funct...

InFEP - Lightweight virtualization of distributed control on white-box networking hardware

Recent developments in networking hardware and software-defined networking have enabled full distribution of network control to reduce control latency and increase reliability. However, both, hardware and software of current white-box networking hardware are highly heterogeneous, which limits the deployment and operation of switch-local control applications. Furthermore, switch-local control ra...

Network Virtualization in Multi-tenant Datacenters

Multi-tenant datacenters represent an extremely challenging networking environment. Tenants want the ability to migrate unmodified workloads from their enterprise networks to service provider datacenters, retaining the same networking configurations of their home network. The service providers must meet these needs without operator intervention while preserving their own operational flexibility...
